Prepare your slurry before sharpening
NANIWA Nagura are small accessory stone that are used for cleaning clogged surface of sharpening stone, however these can also be used to prepare slurry on your sharpening stone before sharpening itself, helping you get the most out of your stones. These stones are best used with Naniwa Super Stone series, but can be used with any other water stones.
Easy to use
Wet you Nagura with spray bottle or by briefly submerging it. These stones don’t need to be soaked. The sharpening stones should also be sufficiently wet. As soon as both stones are wet, rub them together. This will create slurry containing abrasive particles on surface of stone. Once enough slurry has been made, the stone is ready for sharpening.
Choose from range of grit sizes
NANIWA Nagura stones are offered in range of grit sizes according to Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS). Nagura stones are intended for cleaning and creating of slurry, so we recommend you choose Nagura of same or higher JIS grit than is your highest grit stone. For instance if you have a stone with grit 1000, you will choose Nagura with 1000 or higher grit size. It is also possible to use Nagura stone with lower grit number that stone, but this results in releasing of harder particles and resulting slurry will have grit coarser than the stone itself. This is more useful for cleaning the stone.
Maximize the polishing effect
By using the Nagura that is finer than the stone you will increase the polishing properties of the stone. By using very fine Nagura you will not make a 10.000 grit stone out of 1000 grit stone, but the combination of two sizes of abrasive particles will increase the polishing effect.
FAQ
Q: What is the difference between Nagura and cleaning stone?
A: Any stone that is used for rubbing of sharpening stone in order to clean it or to create slurry on surface of sharpening stone can be called Nagura. Nagura is sometimes translated as dressing stone or dressing cube, both can be used equally. To establish nomenclature, Nagura is stone whose primary function is to create slurry on surface of the stone and dressing stone/cube is any stone whose primary function is to clean the surface of clogged or glazed surface of sharpening stone.
Q: What is the difference between Naniwa Nagura and Naniwa Dressing stone A-206?
A: There are two differences. Nagura is intended for creation of slurry on surface of sharpening stone whilst dressing stone A-206 is intended for cleaning the sharpening stones surface. Second difference is that it’s enough to wet the Nagura but dressing stone A-206 must be soaked thoroughly by submerging under water.
Q: Can Naniwa Nagura be used on any water stone?
A: Yes.
Q: Is Nagura stone necessary or is it just an optionally accessory?
A: Use of Nagura is not necessary, but it will positively affect your final sharpening results.
